Social Media Conference for Environmental NGOs
September 4th 2010, EU House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2

A one day conference hosted by the EU Commission Representation in Ireland and in association with the Celsius research group, Dublin City University

Across a range of environmental fields including loss of bio-diversity, maintenance of natural resources and climate change we need to communicate to the public and policy makers the need for a change in our behaviour. At times it seems we are facing a losing battle; but the internet may prove to be a useful means of communicating the threats the earth is facing. This one day conference seeks to explore how the internet is being used to convey the complex issues and challenges associated with the environment.

Members of the academic, political, media and NGO communities will be brought together with social media practitioners to see what best practice can emerge.

Workshops focusing on practical issues in communicating environmental topics and a number of panel discussions will also be held during the day.

Mr Fred Pearce, the well-known science writer for the Guardian and former consultant for the New Scientist, has kindly agreed to deliver the keynote address.

The conference will bring together this community offline and allow a free exchange of ideas. Various keynote speakers from Ireland, Europe and the US have been invited to address the conference. Smaller workshops will discuss themes such as good reporting and legal protection for bloggers. An important part of the conference is to give bloggers an opportunity to network.

The day will end with a small reception.

The keynote address is to be delivered by Zack Exley of Thoughtworks Inc who has created the influential American Blog the www.huffingtonpost.com. He has also worked closely in the Barack Obama presidential election team, and is credited as being the architect of his grassroots campaign finance system.

Zack will talk about trends in blogging online in the US and how the current presidential race has changed online political dialogue.
